Your AI agent is now a
video production studio.

Reelwright turns Claude Code, Codex, or any coding agent into an end-to-end production team — research, script, footage, edit, and final render from a single prompt. It's open source, and it runs with zero paid API keys.

Example productions

Real videos. Real costs. Cents, not subscriptions.

These are productions the Reelwright team shipped end-to-end — concept to final render — with the exact API spend shown. Your agent does the work; you approve the creative.

What you get with zero keys

A full free stack, out of the box.

You don't need paid API keys to make real videos. make setup wires up a complete open toolchain — add keys later only if you want more.

// NARRATION

Piper TTS

Free, offline, human-sounding narration — no cloud, no per-word billing.

// FOOTAGE

Open archives

Archive.org, NASA, Wikimedia plus free-key stock from Pexels, Unsplash & Pixabay.

// COMPOSITION

Remotion + FFmpeg

Real timelines with spring physics, transitions, typography and word-level captions.

// REAL FOOTAGE

Not just Ken Burns

Semantic CLIP retrieval cuts actual motion footage into a finished edit — free/open sources only.

// RESEARCH

Grounded, not guessed

15–25+ live web searches across YouTube, Reddit, news & academic sources before a word of script.

// CAPTIONS

Word-level subtitles

Auto-generated timing, TikTok-style — burned in and ready for social.

Why it's different

Most tools give you a clip. This gives you a production team.

There's no code orchestrator — your coding agent is the orchestrator. Every creative decision lives in inspectable YAML manifests and Markdown director skills, and every choice is logged with alternatives and confidence.

// SCALE

13 pipelines, 400+ skills

Explainers, talking heads, screen demos, cinematic trailers, podcasts, localization, documentary montages and more — powered by 70+ production tools.

// CONTROL

No vendor lock-in

A scored selector ranks every provider across 7 dimensions and picks the best match. Swap free/local and cloud providers freely.

// QUALITY

Anti-slideshow gates

Delivery-promise enforcement blocks slideshow-looking renders; mandatory post-render self-review (ffprobe + frames + audio) means no garbage ships.

// GROUNDED

Reference-driven

Paste a video you love — the agent turns it into a grounded, differentiated plan instead of making you invent the perfect prompt.

// BUDGET

No surprise bills

Cost estimate before execution, spend caps, and per-action approval thresholds. You see the number before you spend it.

// OPEN

Yours to inspect

AGPLv3. Read every skill, fork every pipeline, own your workflow. The agent explains its reasoning at each step.

FAQ

The honest answers.

Is it really free?
Yes. The full engine — all 13 pipelines, 70+ tools, 400+ skills — is open source under AGPLv3. The Pro Pack is optional: curated configs, templates, a playbook, community and support. You're paying for the shortcut, not the software.
Do I need paid API keys?
No. Out of the box you get offline narration (Piper), free/open footage (Archive.org, NASA, Wikimedia, plus free-key Pexels/Unsplash/Pixabay), composition (Remotion), and post (FFmpeg). Adding keys unlocks premium generation, but the zero-key path makes real videos.
How is this different from one-prompt AI video apps?
Those give you a single clip. Reelwright runs the whole pipeline a real team would — live web research, scripting, scene planning, semantic footage retrieval, editing, quality gates, and a proper render — with your agent orchestrating and you approving at every creative decision.
What does a video actually cost to make?
Depends on the providers you enable. Example team productions ran $0.15 (Ghibli-style animation), $0.69 (product ad, one key), and $1.33 (60-second animated short). Budget governance estimates and caps spend before anything runs.
What's in the Pro Pack that isn't in the free repo?
Curation and convenience: premium pipeline configs, a style-template library, the Faceless Channel Playbook, a private Discord, priority issue triage, and a license key. It's not relicensed code — the engine stays open.
Can I use it commercially?
The videos you make are yours. The software is AGPLv3, which has implications if you host or redistribute it as a service — see the AGPLv3 license. The Done-for-you tier exists if you'd rather we run it.
